In Spring 2012, Rutgers University - New Brunswick witnessed the commencement of a new instructional lab in collaboration with National Instruments. Known as the Digital Signal Processing lab, it features a NI-USRP (National Instruments - Universal Software Radio Peripheral) Software Defined Radio (SDR) platform and NI LabVIEW software on PCs. The graduate class Digital Communication Systems in Rutgers ECE taught by Dr. Predrag Spasojevic took full scope of the equipment provided by National Instruments to run many experiments and the students completed several projects on LabVIEW and tested their code on USRPs.

 

One of the key problems in integrated hardware and software systems is that debugging is time consuming and that it is hard to isolate whether the problem is in the hardware or software. Through LabVIEW and USRPs, students are able to build and troubleshoot radios using only software prior to hardware integration. This process allows for modular debugging of complex hardware and software integrated systems.
